Ministries

"A faithful member accepts Christ's call to be involved responsibly in the ministry of his church... including the giving of money, time and talents."
          Book of Order
          Presbyterian Church (USA)

The work of Westminster Church in sharing the "good news of Jesus Christ" is vested in committees, known as ministries, of the Session. We have a unicameral form of government at Westminster. Each ministry is chaired by an elder, with other elders and members serving as members. Members who are not presently serving on a particular ministry willingly support the mission of the church with offerings of their "time and talents."

ADMINISTRATION and FINANCE
The Administration and Finance Ministry is responsible for the sound business management and faithful stewardship of Westminster. The work of the ministry is divided among four committees: Personnel, Stewardship, Finance and Property.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
The goal of Christian Education in the PC(USA) is: "To equip persons to live as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, growing into maturity into the very fullness of the stature of Christ." At Westminster, we affirm that goal and add the following Biblical basis for our ministry: DEUTERONOMY 11:18-21; PROVERBS 3:5-6; MATTHEW 28:19-20; EPHESIANS 4:11-12. Another responsibility is to provide childcare for all activities of the church.

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE and HOSPITALITY
Our mission is to be a welcome and hospitable congregation concerned about assimilating people into the life and ministry of Westminster, being concerned about people who are ill, bereaved, or who merit attention and support for any reason and to provide appropriate care that will meet their needs. We celebrate with our members the joys of life by supporting them in their accomplishments. We let our members know that our actions are grounded in God's love for us and in the commandment that we love our neighbors as ourselves. We have five established sections within our ministry: Caregivers, Fisher Folk, Shepherds, Hospitality and Membership. Presbyterian Women is under the oversight of this ministry.

OUTREACH
The Outreach Ministry has oversight for congregational participation in local, presbytery, and national and international missions. We support the four denominational offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing, Pentecost Offering, Peacemaking Offering and Joy Offering. In addition, we support the Good Samaritan Ministries through monetary and canned good donations. We also provide missionary support; currently, that missionary is Ellen Sherby who is serving in Nicaragua. We do a special offering for the Presbyterian Children's Home at Talladega.

WORSHIP
The Worship Ministry designs and supervises programs to promote friendship and support among members, to welcome members and visitors to church and to provide information about church activities. We train ushers, greeters, and hosts. This ministry encompasses everything related to the worship service, and a big part of that is the music program, all of our current choirs - adult, youth, children's and handbell. Worship is responsible for Communion.

The Music Ministry of Westminster is based on our belief set forth in the Catechism that the chief end of human life is to glorify God and enjoy God forever. It is our mission to provide all members in the body of believers with an avenue to glorify God through the making of music. We believe that by offering God our best through music, we make ourselves available for use by the Holy Spirit. God's music can speak to, comfort, challenge and empower our congregation.
